My PINK bonanza is behind this freezer door. While it may not look like much of a "find" to some, I have to say it is to me!!!!
My PINK bonanza is this. . . . package after package of. . . . .
99% fat free ground turkey!!!
We eat lots of this. . . . and it's not cheap! I usually pay between $5.49 to $5.69 for a package. So, the day. . . . .I walked into our local HY-VEE store and discovered they were running a special on this PINK gold. . . .I went nuts!!!! First, I checked with the butcher to be sure there was no limit. . . . . and then I filled my cart!
The special was "buy one package at $4.99 (already 50 cents off a package!) and get one FREE"!!! That made each package $2.50. . . . a savings of about $3.00 each!!
THE STONE RABBIT supports our use of so much of this type of ground turkey because it's very low in fat AND sodium. He has helped me come up with some of the meals I make with it.
Here we have some of the ingredients I use, in conjunction with the turkey, to make one of my husband's favorite...TURKEY TACO SALAD! I also love this brand of corn chip because it's also pretty low in sodium and saturated fat. The salsa is made by a wonderful local husband and wife. . . it's natural and also low in sodium. Finding low sodium tomato products has been a challenge, but thankfully, more and more folks are manufacturing them. Unfortunately, they seem to cost more. . . but I'm seeing a decline in those prices as more products hit the shelves. The beans are "no salt added"!! So far, I have not found "no/low fat refried beads that are also low sodium". . . .so I get this type and "smash em" up and we pretend they're the real deal! :)
Another dish we cook is TURKEY MEAT LOAF. I can hear you folks salivating!!! :)
I have gotten so use to the taste of my form of meat loaf that I really don't care for beef meat loaf any more. Again, I use low sodium corn flake crumbs or regular bread chunks I soften in milk and add to the meat for texture. I also use the dried onion flakes and no salt ketchup. I do add a bit of Worcestershire sauce for a bit of flavoring. . . .but not lots, as it contains sodium.
Another favorite of my husband and my daughter-in-law's are yummy TURKEY BURGERS! :) I'll be YOU would like them, too!
I add the products you see pictured and form into patties. The key is to not burn the burgers (cuz there's no fat oozing out while you're frying them), so I keep a little bit of water in the pan. . . and add a bit of Worcestershire sauce to the top of each burger and I cook them for about 10 minutes on each side. If I don't let them "get away from me" and let the water go completely out, I end up with a "caramelized" burger. . . and they are pretty danged good!
TURKEY MEAT BALLS AND SPAGHETTI is a dish we also enjoy!!!
I use pretty much the same ingredients to flavor the meat as I do in meat loaf, except I add dry Italian Seasonings. Finding low sodium spaghetti sauce was also hard until our store started carrying this brand which is called "CUPINI'S". It's from a locally owned business and has no preservatives. . . and very little sodium!!!! I also use that sauce when I make another great dish: TURKEY STUFFED GREEN PEPPERS! :)
I can tell I have a few of you hooked!!!
Of course, I use my PINK bonanza when I prepare TURKEY CHILI!
I brown the turkey and add sodium free chili seasoning, no salt chili beans, no salt added tomatoes and some fresh chopped onion and cook away!! It's really very good and best of all, it's very healthy!
Because it's Lent and we try to not eat meat on Fridays, THE STONE RABBIT came up with another use for ground turkey. . . .TURKEY FISH PATTIES!
Of course he was teasing, but I thought it was pretty clever. I'm thinking I just might fry up a batch of TURKEY FISH PATTIES. . . just for kicks!
I'm certain you will agree the you, too, have found a PINK BONANZA when you visit Beverly at HOW SWEET THE SOUND!
She will have lots of blogs that will be filled with all sorts of wonderful PINKS on Pink Saturday! Have a great time!
