The day before Mother's Day was just beautiful in our city of Independence, Missouri. It was as if the weather had been specially "ordered" for the annual Flower and Garden Sale on THE SQUARE of this historic town!!
The vendors set up shop around the old court house, giving us the longed for burst of color which, after our Missouri Winter, is always such a welcome sight.
Besides the amazing array of plants, you can usually find President Harry S. Truman, strolling around The Square, greeting the shoppers and . . . .
reminiscing about his unexpected victory over Dewey!!! In fact, he keeps a copy of the newspaper with that famous headline in his pocket!!
This year my neighbor was able to attend the sale with me. She was pleased with the gorgeous plants she found for her flower pots.
I ran into my buddy Sharleen at the sale, too. She was hunting for a hanging plant. . . and was really impressed with the size and beauty of this one!!!
In fact, Sharleen no doubt knew I'd be at the sale, so she wore her PINK jacket. . .just in case I needed a Pink Saturday photo!!!
I've trained my friends well!!! :)
This vendor had such a gorgeous selection of hanging plants!!!
I didn't get hanging plants, but did pick up several small pots of Gerber Daisies to use as Mother's Day gifts the next day!
Sharleen was pleased with her purchased. . . and the help she had in getting that huge plant to her car!!
This is Debbie Kraft, a local gal and the author of "Perfect 10 Cookbooks, Family Secrets" . I saw that she not only had her cookbooks for sale, (I bought mine at another sale) but she also had added a line of "toppings" which she calls "Island Jamz". My neighbor and I each purchased a jar. . . I selected Pineapple-Coconut Rum!!!! I'm saving it to drizzle over some yummy vanilla ice cream one day. . . very, very soon!!! If you clink on the link, you can see the amazing selection of flavors. . . and the many uses for her delicious "toppings"!!
This is Stephanie Speers. . . another local entrapeneur.
Stephanie creates the most delicious sweet treats. Her business, called PIN-UP PASTRIES, specializes in cupcakes, cake pops, cookies and brownies.
Don't you just LOVE how she incorporates so much PINKNESS into her displays and creations? I sure do!
I personally had to sample one of these and . . . .
one of these!!!
Somebody had to do it. . . .right? :-)
They were wonderful!!!!
I feel so lucky to live near our wonderful square that hosts so many great events throughout the year. . . especially the annual garden show. It's a very special surprise when local small businesses share their wares at these events, too.
Just looking at Stephanie's wonderful cup cake pictures makes my mouth water as I write this post. Sadly, I don't have any of her sweet delights to satisfy my urge for sugar.
HOWEVER. . . I did remember that I still had the box of PINK Cuppy-cakes left from last week's Pink Saturday Birthday Party!!!!
Sadly, THE STONE RABBIT reported there was just ONE PINK Cuppy-cake left!
It seems the hubby had been enjoying these little goodies all week long!!!! Guess I will have to find a better hiding place in the future! ;-)
While these little gems are not nearly as pretty OR tasty as Stephanie's, THE STONE RABBIT and I have to say. . . .
they are still pretty danged yummy!!!!
Please visit Beverly at HOW SWEET THE SOUND for a long list of fellow bloggers with PINKS to share with you!
Happy Pink Saturday!!
DANA
What a fun time, Dana! You even had your picture taken with Harry Truman! Did you know, he came to Houston Mo, in 1958 to dedicate the new hospital. I was a sophomore at HHS and in the band(French Horn). I was honored to participate in playing the national anthem that day. Happy memory! We enjoyed touring the library and his and Bess' home a few years ago.

No wonder those Hostess cupcakes are gone - I never buy them because I like them more than the bakery cupcakes! So you can't really fault Mr. Dana for scarfing them up! Love your picture with Harry S. Truman - he looks great for his age and being dead, too! You are lucky to live so close to such a neat place - did you get plants that day? Those mixed pots are so beautiful. I have nada, zilch and none annuals right now - it's just so dry and hot I'd be just throwing $$$ away. Have a wonderful weekend, Dana. xoxo Nancy

It all looks so fabulous...it would have been dangerous for me to be around those goodies though. I agree, Harry looks great for a dead guy. (No disrespect intended, just sayin')

What a great series of pretty shots. You all must have had such fun. The flowers and that hanging basket are gorgeous. I know I would have spent every dime in my purse so it is a good thing I am looking at your pictures rather than having been there in person. HPS.

Wow Dana, I haven't purchased any plants this year because my sister would have to water them. I hang plants off our deck every summer. Sharleen was so lucky to find that gorgeous hanging plant. It is huge. Everything looks beautiful on the courthouse steps. I would love to be able to go to the flower fun!
I think the cupcakes are so pretty and displayed perfectly in pink. I have to tell you cupcakes do not make me want to eat them. Maybe it is because I have baked a gazillion of them when my five kids were in school, band and sports. I don't need them anyway. I probably would like the pink hostess cakes though. They have CREAM inside.HA!
I did spend a couple of hours at the antique store this morning. I bought something I so do not need. I caved and bought them anyway. I found four two handled soup dishes with a plate that matches. Made in England and they are green and creamy white, which is my favorite color. Kind of like transfer wear but prettier. They are vintage and I will post them in a few days.
Well, Bill and I are playing cards so I better get back to them. He was on the phone for a few minutes so I rushed over to say hello. Love the phto of you and harry. smile.
Love, Jeanne

Dana,
Jillian was telling me about cake pops and I was asking her what in the world were "cake pops" so she told me you had pictures of them on your blog. I came over to see them and saw all the beautiful flowers (I liked the Gerber Daisies you picked out) on the courthouse steps. What a neat idea for a flower show and sale - especially with Harry around for the fun. Finally, your weather there looks gorgeous and I hope you and SR are enjoying it as we are ours! Have a great Pink Saturday and weekend.

What fun! And what lovely flowers. Wouldn't my senior mom have loved to do some gardening shopping there as well! Then again, my scales might not have been happy as I KNOW I'd have been indulging in way too many of those yummy looking pink goodies! Thanks for a delightful Pink Saturday visit.

Dana, those baskets are gorgeous. How did you resist? And, I love gerbera daisies, too.
You are torturing me with those cupcakes. I looked in several stores again yesterday. I'm not giving up.
Harry Truman was my father's favorite president. I can only imagine what my father would have thought of a few others we have had since.
Happy Pink Saturday, dear friend.
